Current Skincare Routine

Hi everyone!

Hope everybody is having an awesome holiday. Here’s a quick one to update you on my current skincare routine- by popular request! Most of the products I use I’ve already discussed at some point. If I have, simply click on the link to see the full review. Enjoy!

Step 1- Cleanse

Step 2- Treat Eye Area

Step 3- Tone

Step 4- Serum

I recently learned from the gorgeous lady who runs that Vitamin C serum is most effective during the day as it works alongside your sunscreen to protect your skin from the damaging effects of UV rays i.e. wrinkles and sunspots. I previously used Hydraluron in the morning after my toner, but now I use this instead (it has Hyaluronic Acid in it anyways, so I’m still getting the extra hydration). If your Vitamin C says to use it only at night though, please adhere to the instructions. I got this particular one from the Youtopia Beauty website.

Step 5- Moisturise

Where has this moisturiser been ALL MY LIFE? Another tip I got from myhairmybeautyNG. It is hands down the best moisturiser for my skin. It is hydrating, lightweight and it helps control oil production during the day. There really is a remarkable difference as my skin does not get as shiny as it did previously. I got this from the Jumia website.

Step 6- Sunscreen

My favourite sunscreen so far. It has a silicone-y finish which I really like. And it doubles as a primer too.

Step 1- Double Cleanse (i.e applying cleanser, cleansing face, then repeating. This ensures that ALL traces of makeup are thoroughly removed from the skin. You do not need to Double Cleanse in the morning, or on days that you don’t wear makeup)

Step 2- Treat Eye Area

Step 3- Tone

Step 4- Serum

Step 5- Moisturise

This is the only Proactiv product I still use religiously, and I don’t see this changing anytime soon because I LOVE it. Its moisturising, but still contains Benzoyl Peroxide which my skin responds positively to.

Step 6- Spot Treat

Product- DUAC GEL

I apply this on any blemishes. This was recommended to me by Edikan in my Comments section (thank you so much!). I really really like this product. Before I knew about this gel,I would usually spot treat with 10% Benzoyl Peroxide which can be really harsh. This gel has 5% BP which is strong enough to work, but it does not burn.

I still use my fave TURMERIC AND BENTONITE CLAY MASK about 3x a week. I use the mask after cleansing at night. Depending on how my skin feels, I may not use toner afterwards and just go straight to Hydraluron. I of course also still use the HOT CLOTH CLEANSE method to clean my face.

And thats it! Whats your skincare regimen? Do you use any of the products mentioned in this post?

Let Me Know,

I would really love to try the black soap and the Oriki eye cream. To be honest, i haven’t started using eye creams yet, and i’m no spring chicken.

I have a question Nicole. Would you advise applying eye cream before moisturising? I suppose the science or logic for this is for the eye cream to soak up the wonderful nutrients the cream has to offer rather than slather on moisturiser, then eye cream, in which case the cream isn’t as effective.
I have had dissenting views, and would love to know what you think.

      Hi Ari!
I don’t have a straightforward answer for that. I think that if you have dry skin and therefore use a moisturiser that is rich and nourishing, then you do not even need an eye cream. You could probably just apply a bit more around the eyes.

Because my skin type is oily and blemish prone, the moisturisers I use either have sebum controlling/mattifying properties (like the Clinique Moisturising Gel in this post), or contain an acne fighting ingredient like Benzoyl Peroxide (like the Proactiv one I mentioned as well). So both the moisturisers I use would be TERRIBLE for the eye area. So I just use eye cream and I don’t use my moisturiser over or under.

However if you have normal/combination skin and your moisturiser isn’t THAT rich, then you should probably just use eye cream around the area, and not moisturise over or under it as well. Just pat the cream in and let it do its job without being hindered by any other products.

Was this helpful? Sorry I went on a bit xx

Love your site! Any idea where I can get the La Roche sunscreen from in Lagos? Been searching for a sun screen for the longest time that doesn’t make me look blue and is great for oily skin.

Hi Kemi! Thank you so much for saying that. I actually don’t know anyone who sells it here sadly 🙁 I’m going to start petitioning stores to stock this because it is so necessary (and mine is running out lol) xx

I am currently using the fig turmeric black soap and its helped improve my skin generously , firmer, brighter and clearer…I have used the clinque moisturizer a long time a long… when I was younger in the UK… I was following with the 3 step range from clinque…it was amazing but I didn’t really indulge much in it cos I was a lot youthful. I might give it a try again since I need a moisturizer beCos I have bin using my luxe goat milk lotion to moisturize and I don’t know if am doing it right… my current routine is I hot cloth cleanse and double cleanse with the turmeric black soap…I don’t tone I skip that…still looking for one to use my skin is acne free and sensitive then I moisturize with goat milk lotion and I use a Neutrogena sunscreen. I also do the bentonite clay and turmeric mask weekly. I don’t miss it its GREAT. I am definitely getting the Vitamin C serum right away. Will look into starting to use an eye cream…thanks darling.

      Hi Lizzy! Hows it going?
The goats milk lotion is a body lotion. Please do not use it on your face. The Clinique Dramatically Different Gel is awesome for oily skin, but if your skin isn’t oily, might I suggest the Dramatically Different Lotion? xx

Nicole, saw your article on bellanaija and came straight to your blog. Greatjob. I am 36, and a working mum. I must have combination skin type but what I use currently is the neutrogena rain bath and jergens shea butter. Weekends I use my beyond belief hydrating mask and neutrogena facial scrub. Help a sister! I want to make my skin look beautiful

Hi Uche! Thank you so much for coming. I am unfamiliar with the Neutrogena rain bath, but Jergens Shea Butter whilst being a great product is definitely not for the face, it is a body lotion. Please don’t use it on your face anymore.
This post is quite expansive on my beauty routine. It is basically a step by step guide on what a skincare regimen should entail, and the products that I use personally. So why not have a look through, and if you have any further questions please feel free to comment and I will do my best to help you further. Thanks again and I hope this was helpful xx

    Hi Nicole,
Why are my just seeing this site today??? Its amazing! I read your interview on myhair which led me here. Your honesty made me fall in love with you I swear, you give responses in such a way that made me feel like we are bffs already! I used to be a product a junkie who constantly tried new products cos nothing seemed to be working for my sad problematic skin since teenage years. (I’m 32 btw)
Fast forward to August 2015 and came through for bae!!! Benzoyl peroxide weakened my skin so much, and I thought nothing would work better cos it did help a bit but it’s damn too harsh even my pillows cry!
At the risk of coming off as talkative, I will continue cos I just feel like I can talk to you (I wonder why, lol), nimueskin thought me that products that are gentle and effective are my skin’s bestie! From exfoliation with no granules (nimue exfoliating enzyme) to a night moisturiser that doubles as a spot treatment and oil control (nimue purifier), it purifies my skin! Broad spectrum sunscreen that leaves no white film on my face (sun c 40) my skin is so much better!
I feel like I need to try the cliniQue moisturiser u mentioned though. And I’ve found your site and I’m not leaving! Meanwhile, I’m a mom of 1, whom I named Naeto, thanks to ur hubby! Lol! I live in SA. Will send you a private message to get some advice later, thanks a lot!

Hi Oby! Yayyyy thank you so so much for your comment, I really appreciate it. That was actually my first interview ever so I was quite nervous about how I would have come across, so I am so pleased!
BP is definitely quite harsh, sadly when I have breakouts its the only thing that really works *sigh*. And please try the Clinique Moisturiser and let me know your thoughts.
So glad you discovered the site 🙂 Pleaseeee make sure you come back, and give Naeto a big kiss for me xx

I copped two bottles of goat’s milk lotion based on your review. I haven’t really enjoyed using it because the smell is sooo cloyingly, mind numbingly strong!! It’s like a cloud! It smells like maple syrup and cinnamon and if it was toned down it would be gorgeous. Methinks she was a bit heavy handed with the fragrance when she was making them. I’ve done everything possible to dilute it, but I gave up and chucked the two bottles in the bin.

Recently I decided to add natural coconut oil to my skin care regimen. I use it at night only because of my excessively oily skin. I want to know if it can double as a good eye cream.

Have you tried an oil cleanser for your first cleanse when double cleansing? You can use coconut oil, clinique TTDO, Emma Hardie or any balm. I did that before using the fig soap as a second cleanse as I felt soap twice on my face was a bit harsh

    • Nicole
Posted at 13:06h, 16 January Reply

Hi Ash, thanks for stopping by!
I have actually. The one I tried is a beauty blogger favourite- ‘Ultrabland’ by Lush Cosmetics, and it is truly beautiful. I personally don’t find using the Fig Soap harsh on my skin though so I’m quite happy to continue double cleansing with the soap- but for those who may have sensitive skin, this is something to consider. Readers take note!

      Thanks Ash xx

      Hi Chikito!

Happy new year nwanne. You most certainly CANNOT apply the gel all over your whole body. 1) It comes in a small bottle so it’ll be really expensive and 2) It is really mattifying and will make your skin dry. Hope you are enjoying the Hydraluron and please let me know how everything goes xx

Can you clarify what you mean by a toning lotion? Do you mean a toner (acid exfoliator) to use after cleansing?
